RESUMEN
En las últimas décadas viene siendo un tópico señalar el contraste entre los avances de las ciencias biomédicas y la incapacidad de la ética para valorar el alcance y la correcta aplicación de los nuevos descubrimientos. Es lo que se conoce como ethics lag. Un representativo grupo de expertos en genética y bioética ha tomado la iniciativa de atenuar esta diferencia con una línea argumentativa caracterizada por poner en evidencia determinadas distinciones conceptuales y defender algunas aplicaciones de la ingeniería genética más allá de objetivos estrictamente terapéuticos. El contenido del artículo es un resumen de esa iniciativa.

ABSTRACT

In the last decades it has become a commonplace to point out the contrast between the progress which is taking place in biomedical science and the inability of ethics to ponder the scope and correct application of these new discoveries. This phenomenon is known as ethics lag. A representative group of experts in both genetics and bioethics have put forward the initiative to lessen this difference through an argumentative line characterised by making clear certain conceptual distinctions as well as by supporting several genetic engineering applications beyond strictly therapeutic objectives. The content of this paper is a summary of this initiative.
